A first insight into genotype x diet interactions in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L. 1756) in the context of plant-based diet use ArchiMer

This preliminary study assessed genotype x diet interaction in late growth of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed with either a fish meal (FM)- or a fish oil (FO)-based diet (M) or an all-plant-based (PB) diet. A total of 550 fish from 224 families were reared together and tagged. DNA was sampled and microsatellites were used to assign parentage. When fish weight was 192 +/- 54 g, two tanks were fed with M (FM: 100%; FO: 100%) and two others with PB (FM: 0% and FO: 0%). Body weight (BW), fork length (FL) and fillet lipid content (CorrFat) were analysed with a linear model and with REML methodology. World fish farm production is growing rapidly. However, the supply of fishmeal and fish oil, the major ingredients of fish diets, has reached a limit because of the limits in the exploitation of wild fish stocks that cannot be increased to meet a growing demand. The main response, especially in Europe, has been the progressive replacement of fishmeal and fish oil by plant products. However, the strong reduction of growth and sometimes survival of fish fed highly substituted diets has urged research on the genetic potential for adaptation to plant-based diets. Facing the finite size of fisheries resources, the important increase of aquaculture production during the last decades has led to the evolution of feed composition with an increasing substitution of fish meal and fish oil with terrestrial plant products. During the same period, selective breeding has been developed in fish and major improvements were achieved on growth, resulting in 4 to 20 % gain per fish generation (Olesen, Gjedrem, Bentsen et al. (2003); Chevassus, Quillet, Krieg et al. (2004)), and also on health and flesh quality traits.

World aquaculture is growing (+ 8% per year) to meet the increasing demand of fish for human consumption that capture by fisheries can no longer cover. Consequently, the need for aquafeed and feedstuffs is rising while volumes of fishmeal and fish oil, the traditional aquafeed ingredients, remain stable. More and more fishmeal and fish oil are substituted by plant products. Between 80 and 95% of fish meal can be replaced by a combination of plant protein sources providing the indispensable amino acids in sufficient quantity to meet the fish needs. To face future decrease of marine resources, replacement of fishmeal and fish oil by plant products is nowadays worldwide priority for the aquaculture of carnivorous fish, especially salmonids. Genetic variability has been recently evidenced for growth ability on plant-based diet and pointed out potential genetic gains. In a context of fast feed evolution, this work compares heritabilities of growth parameters between rainbow trout fed with diet containing fish oil and fish meal and fish fed on diet devoid of marine products. Assessment of genotype diet interaction informs on potential family reranking between diets and potential consequences on current breeding programmes.

Genetic adaptation to dietary environments is a key process in the evolution of natural populations and is of great interest in animal breeding. In fish farming, the use of fish meal and fish oil has been widely challenged, leading to the rapidly increasing use of plant-based products in feed. However, high substitution rates impair fish health and growth in carnivorous species. We demonstrated that survival rate, mean body weight and biomass can be improved in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after a single generation of selection for the ability to adapt to a totally plant-based diet (15.1%, 35.3% and 54.4%, respectively).
